Creating Positive Growth and Change Together

An assessment is often the best way to find answers to difficult questions and to evaluate for concerns such as ADHD, learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and processing difficulties. Synergy Psych works with children and adults to assess their unique challenges and to help them develop a roadmap for achieving their goals.

Undergoing an assessment is similar to taking part in any type of diagnostic testing. Our team, which includes psychologists and learning specialists, administers the tests, analyzes the results, and then makes recommendations for next steps. Our assessments guide our team in determining diagnoses (if applicable) and developing a treatment plan.

Our holistic testing process gives a comprehensive picture of our client’s current functioning. Evaluations include:

  • Cognitive ability
  • Academic achievement
  • Attention factors
  • Emotions and behavior

How We Do It

Formal Assessment

These norm-referenced tests are an excellent way for our assessment team to effectively measure strengths, weaknesses, and current functioning.  For example, we can compare your child’s reading ability with other children that are the same age and/or grade level. Objective testing data offers a wealth of information that would be almost impossible to access any other way.

Interviews

Interviews are a vital way to gain qualitative information about current concerns, history (medical, social, educational, etc.), family background, and other relevant factors specific to the situation. The interview lasts 45 to 60 minutes and gives the psychologist a holistic view of what’s happening in the client’s life.

Observations

Observations are a valuable tool during the testing process. They provide insight into a client’s life and can be especially helpful for our assessment team as they work to develop an effective treatment plan for the client and his/her family.

Informal Assessment

Informal assessments can be used to supplement the information obtained through more formal testing measures. These tools focus on factors such as learning styles, motivation, and habits/behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What happens following the assessment process?

  • We provide specific recommendations in our reports that will help your family move forward with a clear plan. The recommendations can vary greatly depending on the diagnosis.

How should I prepare my child for testing?

  •  We will provide writing utensils, snacks, and all testing materials. If your child has allergies you are welcome to send a snack with them. Children do not need to prepare in advance, as the assessments are meant to assess current capabilities (without additional preparation); however, if you’d like to talk to them ahead of time about the testing process, we encourage you to refer to it as a “learning checkup” and explain that it is important to have a positive attitude and to give their best effort as some parts will be easy and some parts will be difficult. The psychologist can answer any specific questions that you may have about communicating with your child during the initial parent session.

Does insurance cover this type of testing?

  • It depends on your specific insurance plan and the nature of the evaluation. Although our office is considered “out of network” for all insurance, we do provide a statement at the end of the assessment process that can be submitted for reimbursement. To find out what your plan may cover, call the number on the back of your member card and ask about your out of network benefits.

Is my child too young?

  • We complete evaluations for children as young as 5 but can typically complete a “full” evaluation starting at age 6.

What does the re-evaluation process look like?

  • In order to have an accurate profile of a child’s current functioning and maintain appropriate accommodations, many schools require a re-evaluation every 3 years. The re-evaluation process is almost identical to the initial process; however, our returning clients do receive a discount and are also given the opportunity to see how scores have changed over time.

Testimonial

“I work with students who have learning and/or processing difficulties, and frequently work with assessment groups. The assessment that Synergy provides is, by far, the best one I’ve seen, and the most helpful to me, as an educator. I even received a personal, handwritten thank you note with a gift card for contributing documents for the assessment process! Completely unheard of, but very much appreciated!” – Anonymous
